Anita Kemi Dasilva-Ibru & ERAF Run a Micro-Loan Program to Help Widows Start a Small Business

ERAF is a non-profit, non-governmental organization that has been dedicated to serving the needs of vulnerable women and children in Nigeria since its inception in 2001. The organization, otherwise known as the Erelu Adebayo Foundation, was started by the wife of the former governor of Ekiti State, Erelu Angela Adebayo with an aim to rehabilitate widows and provide aid to needy children in areas of high unemployment. With the rise of the AIDs crisis in Nigeria, there have been a large number of women who have been left widowed with no way to care for their families. ERAF has worked to correct that injustice by providing skills and aid wherever it can, and has recently partnered with other organizations to begin providing micro-loans.

Micro-loans are loans of a very small amount that women can use to pay for the things that they need to start a small business. Generally the loans are provided and serviced through a co-operative made up of a number of other women who also receive or have received a micro-loan of their own. The idea is to provide a place of support and accountability for the repayment of the loans, however small that they may be, and allow the women a place to come together and help one another achieve their goals. Together these women can assist one another in whatever it is that they need in a place of cooperation and understanding.

The Erelu Adebayo Foundation is operated by a board of five very remarkable women. They are: Erelu Angela Adebayo, Founder and Chairman; Kemi Ibru, who practices medicine at the Ideal Eagle Hospital; Dr. Olusola Bob-Egbe, Medical Director of the Faratori Eye Center; Mrs. Ronke Okusanya, Executive Chairman of BSES; and Agatha A. JohnPaul, who serves as the Programme Officer for ERAF. Together these prestigious ladies have created an organization that has brought help and hope to hundreds of vulnerable women and children.
